Summer may be wrapping up and fall is just around the corner, but I don’t know about you…it is still feeling pretty nice and toasty here in Vermont! So, naturally, what better way to cool things down than with a little winter engagement session inspiration? In fact, Vermont in the winter might just be one of the dreamiest times to do it.
Cozy, Snowy & So Very Vermont: A Stowe Engagement Shoot
There’s something dreamy about fresh snow, rosy cheeks, and the mountains in the background that makes winter engagement photos in Vermont feel extra romantic. And when you’re somewhere as quintessentially Vermont as Stowe? Even better.
While summer and fall tend to get a lot of love when it comes to engagement sessions, winter brings an entirely different feel. Think cozy sweaters, cute coats, snowy trails, evergreen trees, and an excuse to stay extra close to your person.
So, if you’re recently engaged and haven’t scheduled your engagement photos yet, consider this your reminder: you’re not behind! You may actually be perfectly on time to embrace an entirely different season. Take Mini and PJ’s winter engagement session for example… and when I say winter engagement session, I mean WINTER. The high that day was around 13 degrees, and when Mini and PJ made it to the top at von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort, there was absolutely zero visibility. That could have been a bummer, but these two were such good sports, laughing through the cold and completely going with the flow. And their patience paid off! Just as toes and noses were officially reaching frozen status, the mountains popped out ever so briefly to say hello (and goodbye!) and gave them the dreamiest little glimpse for their photos. Their other strategy for surviving the cold? Shots of Fireball along the way. I like the way they think.

Dress for the weather, but have fun with it!
I’m not going to lie to you, it can get pretty darn cold in Vermont… layers are your friend! Winter engagement sessions are the perfect excuse to pull out a beautiful coat, chunky sweater, scarf, boots, or even a fun hat. Choose pieces that photograph well and will actually keep you comfortable. You’ll have a lot more fun if you aren’t freezing five minutes into your session.
Be flexible with your date
If your heart is set on a snowy engagement session, a little flexibility can go a long way. Vermont weather loves to keep us guessing, and a -ber date doesn’t necessarily guarantee a winter wonderland. Talk with your photographer about their flexibility and what happens if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate.
Make a date out of it
You’re already dressed up and taking adorable photos together; why not turn the whole thing into a date? Grab a warm drink beforehand, head out for dinner afterward, or book a cozy overnight stay in Stowe. Your engagement session doesn’t have to feel like another item on the wedding planning checklist. Make it part of the fun! It’s so much better that way, I promise.
