From Mountain Elopement to Barn at Smuggler’s Notch Wedding: An Adventurous Two-Day Vermont Celebration

As more couples find themselves navigating the balance between a larger celebration and something more intimate and intentional like a mountain elopement, it can often feel like a choice has to be made. But Emily and Ben chose a different path with their mountain elopement and wedding at the Barn at Smuggler’s Notch, creating a two-day experience that gave them everything they wanted. By trusting their instincts, they created a two-day experience that gave them everything they wanted: a joyful, traditional wedding surrounded by loved ones, and an adventurous, deeply personal day reserved just for the two of them.Their wedding photographer, Amelia Marie Photography, was there to capture every moment and we can’t wait to share with you all the details below!

The Best of Both Worlds: Traditional Celebration Meets Mountain Elopement Adventure

Emily and Ben have been together for nearly a decade, building a relationship rooted in exploration. Vermont has long been their happy place, a second home where they’ve spent years hiking, traveling, and chasing new experiences side by side. Their story began one summer in college while lifeguarding. Even while attending different schools, summer after summer brought them back together, laying the foundation for a relationship that has stood the test of time. When it came time to plan their wedding, Vermont was an easy choice. But they also knew they wanted something more, a way to weave in the sense of adventure that defines their relationship. So, they created a two-day celebration: one day to soak everything in with loved ones, and another set aside just for the two of them to explore the wild woods on their mountain elopement in Vermont.

A Joyful Celebration at the Barn at Smuggler’s Notch

For their larger wedding day, the couple fell in love with the Barn at Smuggler’s Notch, one of Vermont’s most scenic mountain wedding venues. Nestled in the mountains, the Barn at Smuggler’s Notch offers a perfect setting for couples who want a wedding that feels both elevated and connected to nature. Emily and her bridal party spent the morning getting ready with the talented team at Heather Garrow Studios, setting the tone for a relaxed and joyful start to the day.

Before the ceremony, the couple shared a quiet first look at their venue, one of those moments that felt both grounding and unforgettable. Their ceremony space was beautifully brought to life by Snaps and Sunflowers, with thoughtfully designed aisle markers and a stunning arbor that complemented rather than competed with the beautiful mountain scenery. Surrounded by friends and family, the atmosphere was relaxed and heartfelt. Their vows were especially moving. Through long-distance seasons (Emily working as a nurse during COVID and Ben traveling the country as a pilot), their commitment never wavered. Hearing them reflect on that journey made for one of the most emotional and meaningful moments of the day for guests!

Thoughtful Vermont-inspired details, like lawn games,  wildflower elements, and Ben and Jerry’s for dessert, brought the effortless feeling of a Vermont summer into every part of the celebration. But what truly stood out was the overwhelming sense of love in the room. This was a day centered on togetherness, where every guest felt like an essential part of their story.

A Sunset Elopement Adventure at Stowe Pinnacle

The following evening, Emily and Ben slipped back into their wedding attire and set out for something a little different with their wedding photographer, Amelia Marie Photography, an adventure session! Hiking up Stowe’s Pinnacle Mountain at sunset, Emily and Ben exchanged quiet moments together overlooking Vermont’s sweeping landscape. It was the perfect contrast to their wedding day: intimate, adventurous, and entirely their own.

“We wanted to enjoy our wedding day with friends and family, but also have intentional time with each other without the pressure of a timeline,” the couple shared. “We wanted to capture the importance of our wedding by doing something untraditional with an activity we love doing together.”

This two-part celebration beautifully captured the essence of their relationship and is a reminder that you don’t have to choose just one way to celebrate. You can have the dance floor and the mountaintop. The party and the pause. The people you love, and the quiet moments that are just for you. You can have the mountaintop elopement and the beautiful Vermont barn wedding.

Congratulations, Emily and Ben, on your beautiful wedding weekend!

Wedding Florals 101: Expert Floral Tips from Vermont’s Top Florists

When it comes to wedding florals, it’s easy to get swept away by Pinterest boards and dreamy inspiration photos. But what do Vermont wedding florists actually wish couples knew before diving into this portion of their planning? That’s where this blog post comes in! Our team recently asked some of Vermont’s top wedding florists to share their honest insights, from budgeting tips to trends and everything in between. Don’t start planning your wedding florals without diving into all the details below!

Inquiry Process & Booking Questions for Vermont Wedding Florists

Curious about how to book your wedding florist or what to ask before signing a contract? We asked some of Vermont’s top floral designers to walk us through their inquiry and booking process. Here’s what they shared.

How far in advance should couples book their florist, and what should they have prepared for the first consultation?

“Ideally, couples should book their florist 9-12 months in advance, especially for peak wedding seasons. For the first consultation, they should have a general budget range, inspiration images (even non-floral ones that capture their vibe), color preferences, and a rough idea of their venue setup. For 2026, we are seeing key dates book up over a year in advance so the sooner the better for reaching out.” – Honey Flora

“The general advice is typically 6-9 months, which is great. However, there is no wrong answer here. We work with couples who are planning 2 years out and even 30 days out! I will say sooner is typically better, though. This gives us extra time to source unique blooms and vases for you.” – Tipsy Tulip Designs

Why is it important to have a floral budget in mind before booking?

“An accurate floral budget saves everyone a lot of time and adjusting! We have a range of offerings, from full service design, arrangement and delivery to our u-pick garden where parties can pick and source their own flowers. When we know your floral budget, we can provide the right offerings and style to a party’s vision!” – Snaps & Sunflowers

“Many flowers have different pricing based on the time of year. If you have a must-have flower or a certain look you are going for, knowing your budget can help us determine how we can best accommodate your dream vision without breaking the bank! I hate giving couples sticker shock, but it does happen, especially when couples go in without a budget ready. Flowers are often more expensive than couples expect, so going in without a budget (or a range) often leads to dream floral proposals that are out of reach.” – M’s Wedding Flowers

“A budget or range is always helpful. However, most couples who reach out to me are not familiar with the cost of wedding flowers and may not have an exact budget when we first meet. This is (usually) your first time ever working with a florist! So, I tell couples not to worry; it does not take long for me to present costs to them. Typically, I’ll use an outline that is itemized, and then we can decide what should be prioritized, according to what their top flowers are and where they will have the most impact for your wedding day.” – Flower Power VT

What factors influence the price of wedding flowers that couples might not realize?

“One major factor that can influence flower prices is seasonality, specifically, when a flower is out of season. If a couple has their heart set on a specific bloom that’s not currently in season, we often have to source it from international farms, which means higher shipping costs and limited availability. It’s not just about the flower itself, it’s about where it’s coming from and how far it has to travel to get to your bouquet.” – Heavenscent Floral Art

Floral Trends & Styles Vermont Wedding Florists Are Loving

What trends are you seeing in wedding florals right now, and what do you think is timeless?

“Colorful, romantic blooms! Arrangements that are full of texture and variety. Straying away from super conventional ‘perfect arrangements’ and leaning into more organic, natural floral designs!” – Memory Lane Floral Designs

“We are seeing a lot of monobloom arrangements and more sculptural florals. Think masses of hydrangea in an installation or rose bouquets. I hesitate to claim anything is genuinely timeless in today’s day and age because everything comes and goes so fast. White and greenery will never go out of style, and neither will a wildflower palette, but I don’t look at trendy flowers as a bad thing. Embrace the trends in your florals and maybe opt for more timeless attire, linens or decor.” – Tipsy Tulip Designs

“We’re seeing a beautiful balance between modern minimalism and maximalist moments, designs that are either sleek and refined or wildly artistic and expressive. Unexpected materials like vegetables, sculptural branches, or even chocolate are making their way into floral design, while monochromatic palettes in bold tones give everything an editorial edge. At the same time, timeless favorites like lush, garden-inspired arrangements and thoughtfully chosen color palettes (because classic doesn’t have to mean neutral!) remain staples.” – Honey Flora

“COLOR! I’m so excited to see color returning to florals again! I’m also seeing a lot of smaller bouquets happening instead of the larger, boho-style bouquets we’ve seen in the past. In terms of timeless, roses are and will always be timeless for wedding florals. We use them in almost every wedding we do.” – M’s Wedding Flowers

What Vermont Wedding Florists Want You To Know

What’s something about your job that most people don’t realize?

“Clients might not know that we survey our field and gardens a few times a day to pick the flowers at the exact right time. It is truly satisfying to work with the tiny seeds and plants. In the greenhouse, we watch them grow and evolve right into the event.  Certainly, our flower farm does a lot of weeding on our hands and knees, and has a relationship with each flower, watering and protecting it until blossom time.” – Flower Power VT

“Most people don’t realize how time-sensitive being a wedding florist is. We only have 3-5 days to get your flowers in, arrange them, and then set them up for your event. Typically, we work with more fragile and unique blooms for weddings and events compared to everyday blooms that you’d get for deliveries like birthday and congratulations bouquets. This means once we get your flowers on Wednesday for your Saturday wedding, we are working on your florals around the clock to ensure they are the freshest and perfectly opened on your wedding.” – Tipsy Tulip Designs

“Floral design is a time-intensive process that requires being a bit of a jack of all trades. It’s not just putting pretty blooms in a vase (although that’s pretty nice, too 🙂 ). We run numbers, design floral mechanics, plot out our daily and seasonal logistics, and grow and source our blooms. Before we even begin to design an arrangement, we’ve put in ample time on how the piece will come together. It’s a healthy mix of left- and right-brain activity that keeps us on our toes!”  – Snaps & Sunflowers

What floral elements make the biggest impact on a wedding day (and which can couples skip if on a budget)?

“Most impactful: the bridal bouquet, welcome sign/greeting table florals, ceremony florals (that can be moved and repurposed for a budget friendly piece), and guest reception table florals (even if they are not all the same, or super grand, the smallest touch of florals can add so much to a space! Skip: small boutonnieres, wrist corsages, very elaborate bridesmaid bouquets.” – Memory Lane Floral Designs

“Centerpieces and statement pieces. These make such a big impact in transforming the space to be unique to the couple and their day. In terms of florals to skip, Boutonnieres. They are often lost in photos and crushed when being hugged. They are a very small detail that may not be needed if you’re looking to cut something out. Another one: bridesmaids’ bouquets. They are usually left on a table after photos to wither and dry out. Sometimes, a single stem with a bow can make a big impact for bridesmaids in your photos. Keeping them simple or reusing your bouquets at the bar, cake table, etc. can help lower costs as well.” – M’s Wedding Flowers

“I love to recommend designs for the ceremony that can be reused for the reception.  Large florals in front of the arbor can be moved to the stage or entrance area, while aisle designs look great on the bar, dessert table, and side tables.  This has a great impact on the budget, and typically enables more florals for your wedding in general.” – Flower Power VT

“Bouquets without a doubt, especially the bride’s! You can skip elaborate centerpieces if on a budget, and repurpose bridesmaids’ bouquets with lots of candles at the tables. Sometimes I encourage more candles than flowers, as it can look very romantic! We have a huge candle holder rental collection, which can help spread your budget further.” – Heavenscent Floral Art

What inspires your work, and how do you keep things fresh for each couple?

“Travel, architecture, and nature are huge inspirations for me. I also love paying attention to fashion and interior design trends—florals are just another medium of design. For each couple, I pull inspiration from their personal style, venue details, and color story to make sure no two weddings ever feel the same.” – Honey Flora

“I’ve always loved farming, being outdoors, and working with my hands, but I’ve also had a deep love for creating art. Floral design quickly became the perfect blend of both passions, and nature itself always inspires me. I approach each couple with fresh eyes, knowing I’m helping bring their most memorable day to life. The florals I create will live on in their photos, their memories, and their hearts for a lifetime!” – Memory Lane Floral Designs

“We try to keep in mind that each wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime day for the couple, not just another Saturday. We’re both romantics at heart so it’s easy to extend that empathy into our designs. We consider our designs as artwork and give the process the respect it deserves! We love adding elements that hold meaning to each couple.” –  Snaps & Sunflowers
