Booking your wedding photographer is more than just picking someone with a pretty portfolio; it’s about finding the right fit for your vision, budget, and vibe. From that first email to signing a contract, here’s what to expect (and what to ask) to make the process smooth and stress-free.

First things first, what are some questions you should be asking a wedding photographer when you first meet them? Start with the basics. Ask about their availability, pricing, and what’s included in their packages. Then dive deeper: What’s their approach to capturing a wedding day? Have they worked at your venue before? How do they handle unexpected weather or timeline changes? Can you see full wedding galleries to get a sense of their storytelling style? And our biggest advice: ask yourselves, do you feel comfortable with them?

How far in advance should couples reach out to book their wedding photographer?

“Once you have a date set, reach out to your preferred vendors. If you picked a date in prime season (June-October here in Vermont), reach out as soon as possible. If you are planning a prime Saturday in those months, and you have 6 months or less until your wedding, there is a good chance your first-choice vendors won’t be available. I am noticing this a lot lately. Lots of inquiries I am getting for dates this year have already been booked for at least the last 8 months or longer.” – K&E Photography

“I get booked more than a year in advance pretty often, so I’d say as soon as possible, especially if choosing a popular date. I also sometimes have openings just a few months out, so it never hurts to reach out if you are a last-minute planner or if you have a less popular date.” – Michael Tallman Photography

How do you help couples figure out if your photography style is right for them?

“In my inquiry form, I ask what couples connect with most when looking at my work. Their answer gives me a really great idea of if they’re drawn to the parts of my work that I am leaning into as an artist and I’m not afraid to point couples in a different direction if it doesn’t quite feel right. And, if they don’t answer the question at all, that also says something. I also meet with couples before booking to chat, ask lots of questions about their vision for their final gallery and the story they want to tell, and make sure we’re a good fit.” – Allison Macy Photography

What do you wish more couples would ask during the booking process?

“I wish more couples would ask to see full galleries and not just go off what they see on someone’s website or social media, because that is always going to be the best of the best. I want them to be able to see a well-rounded, full gallery so that they know what to expect in the entirety of the photography experience. You want to make sure that the photographer you hire is consistent no matter the season, weather, or timeline.” – K&E Photography

“‘Have you worked at our venue before?‘ When couples ask this, I can pull up weddings we have done in the past at their venue so they can get a better sense of what their day will look and feel like. If we haven’t, we always make it work.” – Portrait Gallery

Why do you think photography seems like a big investment for couples? What are they paying for that they may not realize?

“Photography is so much more than ‘showing up and shooting’. I joke it’s 90% logistics and planning and 10% of photo execution. (Something like that, or maybe that’s me being a Capricorn!) The craftsmanship is start to finish, paying attention to all the details of your entire day of your people, family, your details, getting inside your heads to know what is valuable to you to know what to preserve. Not to mention the hours of editing after the job of photographing is done!” – Colette Kulig Photography

What should couples consider beyond just price when hiring a photographer?

“Couples should look for a photographer who makes them feel comfortable and truly seen. This person will be by your side for some of the most intimate, emotional moments of your day, so connection matters just as much as talent. You also want someone who’s a master at the art of pivoting. Wedding days do not always go 100% according to plan. A great photographer knows how to adjust quickly, and still capture beautiful, meaningful images no matter what.” – Isora Lithgow Creations

“I am not one to ‘yuck’ anyone’s ‘yum’, I believe that your emotional connection to your choices at your wedding is your own and deeply personal. Everything can be done tastefully if it’s genuine. “The day before. (Think welcome party or rehearsal dinner) Rarely do couples have photographers join them for the day or days leading up to a wedding as guests arrive. What’s your advice for couples who feel awkward in front of the camera?

“Find a photographer who photographs couples who look very comfortable. Why? Because those couples are just like you! Very few people feel natural in front of the camera. The secret is that the photographer knows how to make them feel good in front of the camera, not the other way around. So, find someone who you can trust, and take the pressure off of yourself to ‘perform'”. – Keith MacDonald Photography

“”This isn’t so much advice as it is an approach. I like to break up portrait time with couples into short sessions throughout the day, so it doesn’t feel like a big, formal production. If a couple had to choose one, would you recommend more coverage time or a second shooter?

“A Second shooter! Unless your day is super long with tons of events, you don’t need your photographer there first thing. “Sparkler exit. It’s one of the most ridiculous things during a wedding day and always makes me laugh. Whoever thought it was a good idea to hand all their friends and families who have been drinking for 6+ hours a flame…..and then have you and your partner run through them hoping to not burn your clothes. How to Prepare for Your Vermont Engagement Shoot (Plus, Photos From My Engagement Shoot!)

As the owner of Vermont Weddings, I get to see countless love stories daily and one of the absolute best things about my job is getting to share those stories with all of our readers. As some of you may know, I am also currently engaged and planning my wedding. Today I’m thrilled to finally share my own love story and engagement photoshoot with you. (I know what you’re thinking: Sarah, it took you long enough!)

Recently, my fiancé and I experienced an enchanting engagement shoot, skillfully captured by Keith MacDonald Photography. The photos exceeded all of our expectations and I am thrilled to share them with you below! Admittedly, it does feel a bit strange to write about myself, so in the spirit of being your wedding-planning bestie, this blog post will also cover valuable tips on preparing for your own Vermont engagement shoot. Whether you’re a local or planning a destination session, these tips will help make your photoshoot everything you’ve envisioned.

Cheers to Nine Years

My fiancé, Mark, and I first crossed paths at Champlain College almost nine years ago—it’s hard to believe how time has flown! We spend just about every moment of every day together, so it’s hard to put something past either of us…or so I thought. Over Memorial Day weekend in 2023, Mark orchestrated a master plan to gather our families and friends in Burlington, Vermont for a very special occasion: our engagement. After work, we took his brother’s dog, Brodie, for a walk by Lake Champlain, a routine activity for us. As the sun set, Mark had cleverly placed little hearts in the grass, each with a treat on top for Brodie to find and enjoy. Each heart revealed a different word, to fully spell out “Will you marry me?” At the end of the trail, there was Mark, down on one knee. I was both stunned and overjoyed!

Following the proposal, we made our way back to downtown Burlington, where a surprise engagement party awaited us. Friends, family, and even guests on Zoom had gathered to celebrate our big moment! With the extended holiday weekend, we had the chance to enjoy three days of festivities with our loved ones, indulging in some of our favorite activities like mini-golfing, swimming, and biking. I still don’t know how Mark pulled all of this off, but it was all so thoughtful and just an incredibly special time for us.

All the Details of Our Engagement Shoot

Fast forward to now, and we’re diving into the exciting phase: very slowly starting to plan our wedding. It’s so easy to dole out advice, but honestly a bit tricky for me to navigate personally. There are just so many options out there. (Which is kind of why Vermont Weddings and the Vendor Guide exist in the first place!) One of the best ways to commemorate this special time in your life is to take engagement photos. Mark and I had Keith MacDonald Photography help bring our vision to life! I’ll let the photos speak for themselves below, but wanted to quickly share a few details.

Mark and I first met Keith at one of our early date spots, Mount Philo, for a more casual look. (Mother Nature blessed us with the hottest, sunniest day in September!) Then we made our way to Shelburne Farms for an outfit change and an epic surprise—a vintage car rental! It’s a completely different look and feel from what we did at Mount Philo, and Mark and I are thrilled with how the images turned out. Keith used 3 different cameras during our shoot to perfectly blend digital and film photography and ultimately blessing us with nearly 400 images to choose from. After the car rental, we took some photos in the lush gardens at Shelburne Farms and capped off the night with dinner at the Inn. A truly special day… and without further ado, here are some photos from that epic afternoon.

Tips For Planning Your Own Vermont Engagement Shoot

Now for the part I know you’ve been eagerly awaiting: tips for planning your own engagement shoot! Beyond the fun activities like getting your nails, hair, or makeup done (if you choose to do any of that, of course) the following tips are crucial for creating the perfect engagement photoshoot:

Choose the Perfect Location

Choosing the right location for your Vermont engagement shoot is essential in capturing the magic of your relationship. Vermont offers a myriad of stunning backdrops, from rolling green mountains to quaint small towns or lakeside views. A great way to stay planning is to think of places that hold sentimental value or simply make you and your partner feel at ease. (Choosing a familiar place can make something unfamiliar like an engagement shoot seem less intimidating!) For example, maybe it’s the park where you had your first date, a cozy corner café where you spent countless hours chatting, or even the spot where you will be getting married. Discuss these options with your photographer—they often know hidden gems that could be the perfect setting for your photos. Think outside the box and don’t be afraid to choose a place that truly represents your unique love story and interests.

Communicate with Your Photographer

Communication is key to a successful engagement shoot. Don’t hesitate to share your vision and any special requests you have with your photographer. They are professionals for a reason, and their number one goal is to help you feel confident and comfortable during this once-in-a-lifetime event! This transparent conversation ensures that your engagement shoot not only meets but exceeds your expectations, creating stunning, meaningful photos that truly capture your love story.

Consider Bringing Personal Props & Coordinate Your Outfits

Keith recommended that Mark and I prepare two different outfits for our engagement shoot and bring some personal props to give a unique flair to our photos. One of my favorite moments was clinking our glasses after pouring some ginger ale (I bet I fooled you into thinking it was champagne!) I also picked up a flower bouquet on a whim just before we left for our engagement shoot. These elements not only looked adorable in the photos but also held sentimental value, reminding us of many lazy afternoons spent exploring Vermont with our favorite beverage in tow, or all the times Mark has surprised me with flowers, just because. Whether it’s a meaningful item, like an heirloom piece of jewelry, or something playful, like your pet, incorporating personal props can make your photos even more special. Also, if you don’t know what to do with your hands? Problem solved.

Choosing what to wear for your engagement shoot can be both exciting and a bit daunting. When selecting your outfits, consider the season and location. Layers are great for Vermont’s fluctuating temperatures, and it’s best to avoid large logos or overly busy patterns. Pinterest is the perfect spot to grab some inspo, and trying on outfits at home with your partner before your shoot is extremely helpful. Your outfits should not only reflect your personality but also make you feel comfortable and confident. Trust me, feeling good in what you’re wearing will shine through in your photos!

Remember to Stay Relaxed and Have Fun

The biggest thing I will remember from our engagement shoot is how much fun we had. Keith helped Mark and me loosen up and truly enjoy the moment. I remember at one point, we were trying to nail some more serious, old Hollywood-type poses with the vintage car we rented, but Mark and I both kept bursting into laughter. Keith captured those candid, joyful moments perfectly, and they ended up being some of my favorite shots. It reminded me that the best photos come from genuine interactions. A Uniquely Rustic Engagement Shoot at Shelburne Farms

We adore that Vermont serves as the picturesque setting for countless romantic tales—be it a first date, a memorable vacation, an engagement, or a grand wedding celebration. Although Cassie and Keegan are not hosting their wedding in Vermont, they sought to capture the essence of our enchanting state through their proposal and engagement photos, expertly taken by Keith MacDonald Photography! Last October, Keegan coordinated with Keith to document his proposal at the Von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont. The couple was delighted by the breathtaking peak foliage adorning the surrounding hills, amplifying Cassie’s astonishment at the proposal. Opting to forego an engagement shoot in their home state of Connecticut, they chose to return to Vermont for another photography session with Keith- and we’re excited to share the stunning images from that special shoot below!

For their engagement shoot, Cassie and Keegan they chose to host their photoshoot at Shelburne Farms, a popular destination for couples in Vermont. Cassie and Keegan enjoyed a perfect May day in Vermont and managed to miss out on our mud season completely. We love how the couple each brought two outfits for the shoot, one that was dressier and one that was more laid-back. Cassie wore a knee length puff sleeved white dress with heels for her first outfit, and straight leg jeans paired with a white blouse and sneakers for her second outfit. Keegan wore a collared striped shirt with jeans and sneakers for his outfit, but then changed into a pair of Nikes and a henley style cream t-shirt for a more casual look.

The couple chose a variety of spots across Shelburne Farms for their photo shoot, including the shores of Lake Champlain, the gardens of the historic Inn, and the inside of a rustic barn. One especially unique aspect of their engagement photoshoot was Keith MacDonald’s choice to use a film camera as well as a digital camera to capture the couple. The film photos came out beautifully, especially the magical picture where Cassie is surrounded by a gorgeous flash of orange, which you’ll see in the gallery below!

We love how the couple chose to spend time vacationing in Vermont together before getting married in Connecticut in 2025. Keith MacDonald will be traveling to photograph their wedding there as well, and we look forward to seeing the incredible moments he captures during Cassie and Keegan’s big day! Autumn Magic in Vermont: A Dreamy Engagement Shoot in Huntington, Vermont

The crisp air, the vibrant colors, and the breathtaking scenery – there’s just something magical about a fall engagement in Vermont! When Keith of Keith MacDonald Photography was asked by his lifelong friends, Chantel and Jack, to capture their engagement photos amidst the stunning landscape of Camel’s Hump, he couldn’t resist.

The fall foliage was on the verge of what us Vermonters call “stick season” (and if you’re a fan of Noah Kahan you’ll know what we mean too!) yet still provided this adventure-loving-couple the ultimate autumn backdrop. Continue reading for all the details.

A Vermont Engagement Shoot in Autumn

Chantel and Jack have been together for 12 years and when it came time to propose, Jack popped the question in Moab, Utah after a packed day of mountain biking. The couple is currently planning their 2024 Vermont wedding and during their latest trip home, asked Keith MacDonald Photography to capture this exciting chapter in their lives.

It was a perfectly cool morning for their challenging hike up, and the picturesque views were well worth it! Against the backdrop of Camel’s Hump, Chantel and Jack’s affection was magnified, illuminating the scene with a sense of tranquility and tenderness. The couple also walked the grounds of a family friend’s house, popping by a log cabin and a small pond. This gallery shows how beautiful Vermont’s in between, “stick season” can be for an engagement shoot!

Tips for Planning An Outdoor Engagement Shoot

An outdoor engagement photoshoot is the perfect way to capture the essence of your love story, especially if you love adventure like Chantel and Jack. Not only does it allow you to create beautiful and lasting memories, but it also gives you the chance to bond with your photographer and get comfortable in front of the camera.

Here are some tips to make sure your engagement shoot is picture perfect:

1. Pick the perfect location – choose a place that holds special meaning to you and your partner. Whether it’s the spot where you first met or a scenic outdoor location, make sure the setting reflects your personality.

2. Consider your outfits – think about the color scheme, the style, and the season. It’s best to avoid overly bright colors and large logos. (You want the focus to be on your love, not your outfits!) If you want to be active during your shoot, make sure to keep that in mind as well and wear something that is comfortable and won’t be restrictive.

3. Hire a Vermont engagement photographer – you want someone who knows how to capture your unique story and personality – and is familiar with the area so they can suggest the best spots to take advantage of VT’s beauty. Check out the photographers in our Vendor Guide.

4. Timing is everything – consider the best time of day for the lighting and weather. (Don’t forget to build in travel times to various locations if needed.) If you’re hoping to hike a mountain, research how long it will take you to reach the peak. The same goes for any other activities you may have in mind, like biking, skiing, boating etc. All those activities take time! (Again, this is where having a local photographer who knows the area helps!) If you’re going for a golden hour shoot, make sure to research when the sun sets. Depending on the time of year, the sun sets fast… and early!

Get ready to smile, laugh, and show off your love during your engagement shoot. It will be a memory that you’ll treasure forever!

My favorite thing about all of these sessions is the authenticity in each of these photos. Each couple is doing what they enjoy together in their photos – and their genuine excitement shines through! Scroll below and get inspired.

Skiing and Snowboarding Engagement Photos

If you love to ski or snowboard, this is such a fun way to show off your love of the slopes. (Side note: I’m amazed how many Vermont wedding photographers can ski or snowboard while taking amazing photos!) The photos are always epic!

Adventurous Engagement Session: Hiking

Hiking is a no-brainer way to add some adventure to your engagement session. There is no shortage of places to explore in the Green Mountain State! If you can find a hike with a waterfall or swimming hole to cool off in – even better.

Plan on going early in the morning or around sunset to capture some amazing lighting!

Hot Air Balloon Ride Proposal

Talk about taking your love to new heights! This would be an amazing bucket list date for your engagement shoot or, in the case of this couple, an EPIC surprise proposal!

Urban Adventure

Exploring a new place is always an adventure, and Vermont has plenty of charming towns to discover.

In Burlington, we’d head to Church Street Marketplace and Waterfront Park. Or, head to your favorite ski town (maybe after hitting the slopes!) for an adventure.

Adventurous Engagement Session at the Carnival

If there is a local carnival or fair in town around the time of your engagement photos, why not take advantage? I think this would be such a fun idea! Hop on the Ferris wheel, ride the swings, and play some games together!

Explore A Lake

Vermont has lots of lakes, and the water always is a great backdrop to use for your engagement photos. Depending on your mood, you could simply just walk on the beach and dip your toes in the water. (Splashing each other optional, but encouraged!) Or you can go all out and go swimming or ride in a canoe together!

Fly Fishing Adventurous Engagement Session

To be honest, I never would have thought a fly fishing engagement could be so romantic and sweet, but THIS IS SO CUTE. This couple’s love for each other and the outdoors shines through their gallery and I can’t get enough.

Just goes to show you that anything you love to do with your partner could be an amazing photoshoot. Be sure to talk to your photographer about your plans so they can prepare for how to best capture you in your element.

Indoor Engagement Session Ideas

Have you considered an indoor engagement session? These are amazing and often overlooked! As the weather turns colder in Vermont, this is especially a great idea to consider for your winter engagement photos.

Two of the biggest benefits of indoor engagement photos are that they are unique and not weather dependent.

While I love a Vermont scenic engagement shoot, your personality can really shine with your indoor location choice! Plus, an indoor shoot gives you more options for when you schedule your photos because you don’t have to worry about the weather.

Convinced? Here are some of my favorite indoor engagement ideas from Vermont photographers.

A Brewery, Wine Shop, Bar, or Coffee Shop

Head to your favorite brewery and cheers to saying “I do” over a brew or two! (Also, holding your mug is a great way to show off that new ring!) Plus, the industrial vibe is a great backdrop for your photos. Beer isn’t your thing? What about a wine bar or coffee shop?

Think about places that are meaningful to both of you as a couple. Years from now you can look back on these photos and remember all the times you spent there together!

Greenhouse for an Indoor Engagement Session

This is one of my favorite ideas! If you were dreaming of an outdoor shoot but the it didn’t work out, a greenhouse can give you that feeling without worrying about the weather. As a bonus, I’d pick out a new plant to bring home and grow to remember your shoot!

Indoor Engagement Session at the Arcade

If posed engagement photos aren’t your thing – head to the arcade! You can your partner can play around and just hang out together while getting some awesome photos. This is a great indoor engagement session idea for the any time of year.

Library or Bookshop

There’s something extra cozy and romantic about this idea! If you are both bookworms this is the perfect way to spend an afternoon while taking some unique photos. Stroll through an adorable downtown and roam in and out of bookshops and libraries.

Record Store for Your Indoor Engagement Session

Love music? Visit a record shop together – maybe you’ll find inspiration for your first dance song!

Your Home

I think couples often overlook their own space for their photos! Taking indoor engagement session photos in your own space has a lot of advantages.

First, you’ll be comfortable, and have access to your stuff to do activities you love like play guitar, make food in your kitchen, or mix up a drink. It’s also good way to include your pets (and then have put in another room if needed, without the help of another person).

Also, I think it’s really special to have part of your actual, daily life captured by a professional.

A Hotel Lounge or AirBnB

Make your engagement session a weekend away! Hotel lobbies and lounges can be stunning, and make for a great backdrop. You can also book a beautiful Airbnb for the weekend. This will be a fun weekend away and you get to make use of a beautiful interior.

Plan Ahead

If you want to take your pictures at a local business, it’s a good idea to call ahead and ask the manager if it’s okay beforehand. I’d say something like: My partner and I love [business name] so much, we’d love to take our engagement pictures on site! Is that something you allow? When would be a good time for you?

Going at a slower time will be less stressful for everyone; you can take your time taking photos without worrying about inconveniencing the business or random other patrons jumping into your shot. Depending on the location and their availability, they may even be able to open to you before/after hours so you can have the place to yourself!

And be sure to leave a tip to show your appreciation!

A Mountain Top Golden Hour Engagement Shoot

Megan and Ryan took a Sunday drive up from Boston last September for an engagement session in Vermont. They hiked up the Wu Ledges overlook in Waitsfield where they were greeted by the beautiful, natural Vermont foliage right at golden hour. Clear skies, warm weather, and a couple in love…what could be better?!

Photographer Keith MacDonald shared how much he loves doing engagement sessions with his wedding clients. “It’s a great way to get to know each other better before the wedding day and shake out any photo-taking nerves.” He also mentioned, “I love working with couples to find new locations, and always recommend timing their session around the late afternoon for that sunset glow!” This couple definitely nailed that timing – check out their gallery below!
