Love in Totality: How This Couple Made Their Eclipse Wedding Dream Come True

Imagine a love story being sealed beneath a total solar eclipse. This is exactly what unfolded for one lucky couple at the breathtaking Jay Peak Resort in Vermont. In an extraordinary concurrence of cosmic timing and personal destiny, their wedding day coincided with this awe-inspiring celestial event, transforming their celebration into a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon!  Every fleeting moment, tender exchange, and even the ethereal eclipse itself were immortalized by the skilled lens of Kate Seymour Photography and we’re so excited to share more with you below.

Ski Passes and Wedding (Eclipse) Glasses

Having origins in the Jay region, Shawn and his now-wife, Bryn, have extensively indulged in skiing there. When it came time for their special day, they just knew it had to be slopeside at Jay Peak Resort. While planning, the couple realized that they’d be remiss if they didn’t involve a once-in-a-lifetime twist! On April 8, 2024, Vermont was in the line of totality, being able to view a one-of-a-kind full, solar eclipse! Knowing this information, the couple focused their special day around this unique celestial event. Bryn found a celestial-themed dress, stocked up on eclipse glasses, and the couple planned their ceremony to end exactly as full totality happened.

Bryn and Shawn’s love for skiing has taken them on adventures all over the world. It was a no-brainer that their wedding would be centered around their favorite activity. However, they didn’t place much importance on traditional wedding photography. The couple only desired to capture their ceremony, family photos, and the solar eclipse. Nonetheless, when their photographer, Kate Seymour Photography, offered to take them on a skiing adventure session a day before their ceremony at Jay Peak Resort, they couldn’t resist.

Kate began by snapping some shots of the couple and their beloved pet, a one-eyed bunny named Percy, at their Slope-Side Condo. Once Percy grew camera-shy, the trio hit the mountain for a fun-filled skiing session. After a few runs, Shawn and Bryn’s friends joined in for some additional photos.

Saying 'I Do' Under the Solar Eclipse

The couple’s much-awaited wedding day coincided with the arrival of a total solar eclipse, whose trajectory directly passed over Jay Peak. Bryn and Shawn, along with their 40 guests, ascended the tram to reach the summit, with palpable excitement in the air as the moon started to eclipse the sun. Upon arriving at the peak, everyone scurried towards the snowy ridge to capture some photos of the happy couple before the ceremony commenced.

As they approached the summit, Bryn and Shawn were welcomed with raucous applause, cheers, and encouraging words from over 100 eclipse enthusiasts who had already gathered at the peak! The following hour was spent in taking family photos and intermittently gazing towards the sky in anticipation of the celestial event.

The couple had orchestrated their ceremony to coincide with the eclipse, with the moon’s gradual takeover of the sun casting an eerie dusk-like lighting that exuded a mystical aura. As the total eclipse drew near, the wedding ceremony began, and the air grew colder as the guests gathered around the newlyweds.

Just as the moon completed its final encroachment of the sun, Bryn and Shawn exchanged rings and were declared husband and wife, kissing as they gazed in awe at the wondrous phenomenon occurring in the sky. Emotions ran high as they hugged and trembled with adrenaline and excitement, relishing in the fleeting moments of totality with their loved ones. The unforgettable experience was etched forever in their memories, and is undoubtedly going to be cherished for years to come!

The next total solar eclipse won’t grace the skies of Vermont for another 400 years, making it a once-in-a-lifetime event for many of us, including myself. I’m honored that wedding photographer Kate Seymour Photography shared such a one-of-a-kind wedding with me so that I could then share it with you, dear readers! Check out Bryn and Shawn’s interview with Vermont’s Local 22 & Local 44 News below for even more details about their celestial celebration.

For those considering getting married during the next total solar eclipse, wherever it may be, Kate Seymour Photography has already expressed to us that she would be thrilled to capture all the love and adventure that comes with such a momentous occasion!

An Intimate Spring Wedding at Farm Road Estate

When a couple loves to dance, you know their first spin around the dance floor as a married couple is going to be a highlight of the evening! That was certainly true for Emily and Ryan who surprised themselves by falling in love with dancing after signing up for lessons together.

Emily and Ryan celebrated at the picturesque Farm Road Estate in West Dover, Vermont, and Kate Seymour Photography was there to capture every twirl. Check out their gallery below!

A Special Day at Farm Road Estate

Emily and Ryan planned for an outdoor ceremony by the pond, followed by dinner and dancing in the main room of the Inn. It was a misty morning as everyone started getting ready, and as the day went on, dark clouds began to roll in, so they decided to move their ceremony into a tent. (Farm Road Estate conveniently keeps one up all summer long.) Emily and Ryan exchanged vows with a backdrop of gentle rain, making it all the more enchanting.

Another special component of the day was the flowers. Instead of real flowers, Emily and her mother spent months meticulously putting together sola wood flowers, which resulted in stunning and unique wooden blooms that adorned the ceremony arch and bouquets.

Surrounded by 60 of their closest friends and family, Emily and Ryan danced the night away. (We love the large glow sticks they provided for guests!) Emily and Ryan’s day was a true celebration  of their love story.

Backcountry Ski Elopement in Vermont

This winter elopement, captured by Kate Seymour Photography, has us totally smitten. Imagine saying your vows surrounded by snow-covered trees, enjoying a personal cake, and enjoying your favorite hobby together…Does it really get any better?! We love it when couples incorporate their hobbies into their celebrations, and this couple nailed it with this dreamy backcountry ski elopement. If you’ve been dreaming of a Vermont winter elopement, keep reading for more details!

Why They Chose A Backcountry Ski Elopement

Krysta and Adrian love being outdoors, so they knew that they wanted their laidback, special day to reflect that. The couple chose a trail they often frequent and brought their backcountry skis for a snow-filled adventure.

Photographer Kate is always down for an adventure with couples, and she not only perfectly captured the day’s events, but also officiated it. (Reminder that if you want to keep your elopement as small as possible, an ordained photographer is a great choice!)

And that cake? Krysta is the baker behind Tucker Hill Treats and made the delicious dessert that was enjoyed by both humans and their dog alike. (The couple’s sweet dog, Lulu, was included in the celebration!)

There is something truly special about an intimate elopement with your partner doing what you love!

HOW TO HAVE THE BEST WEDDING MORNING

I had the best wedding morning. I woke up with my husband and spent the morning at my house hanging with my bridesmaids while we got our hair and makeup done, sipping champagne and catching up. (My husband went out for lunch and jumped in a swimming hole with his groomsmen – it was a very hot summer day!) It was relaxed, simple, and so much fun.

I’ve also been part of wedding mornings that were chaotic and stressful. Ones that left me feeling rushed, hungry, or a just little frazzled heading to the ceremony.

That’s why I know how helpful it is to have a plan for your wedding morning. It’s is the onramp to your wedding celebration, and the goal is a smooth transition that gets you ready and excited.

Read on for our best tips for a smooth, fun wedding morning!

1. Make a clear plan and timeline for your wedding morning

There are a lot of moving parts to your wedding morning, and a lot of emotion. Make a plan with your partner so you both feel good on your wedding morning. Consider the following:

  • What do you want to do the morning of your wedding? (Ex. wake up with your partner, do a yoga class with your wedding party)
  • What do you have to do? (Ex. hair and makeup, get dressed)
  • What do you realistically have time for? (Ex. if you have a 3pm ceremony and 8 person bridal party, that yoga class may not work, but you can wake up with your partner and enjoy a cup of coffee before splitting up to get ready)
  • Who do you want to be with you? (Your wedding morning can be emotional; choose to surround yourself with people who make you feel good. Maybe in addition to your bridesmaids, you really want your aunt there, for example. Many couples choose to get ready separately, but maybe you want to all get ready together!)

Once you know what you want from your wedding morning, you can draft a timeline to keep everyone on schedule. Your unique, final timeline will be created with your vendor team, but we have excellent templates to help you get started in our Ultimate Wedding Planning Guide. (Along with additional tips!)

2. Communicate your expectations about your wedding morning to everyone involved

I recommend sending an email to your wedding party a week in advance with all the details for your wedding weekend. If you need your bridesmaids to be at your hotel room to start hair and makeup by 7am, don’t spring that information on them at 10pm after your rehearsal dinner!

Consider:

  • Where do people need to meet? (Ex. your hotel room, your house, the venue, a salon)
  • When do you need them there? (This is where you’ll rely on your wedding day timeline)
  • What should they bring? (Do they need to bring everything they need for the wedding, or will you be going back to the lodging in between getting ready and the ceremony?)
  • Transportation – are you providing transportation? Is everyone responsible for their own?
  • What do you want them to wear? (It’s important to wear a loose neck or button-down top to avoid messing up hair and makeup)

Clear expectations help everyone feel confident!

3. Set the mood with music on your wedding morning

A fun playlist can help shake off the nerves (and sleepiness) and get everyone in the mood to celebrate! Check out our Spotify Playlists for some inspiration. We curated one specifically for your wedding morning. (Don’t forget to pack and charge a portable speaker.)

4. Pass out gifts on your wedding morning

If you’re planning to give gifts to your bridesmaids and groomsmen, the wedding morning is a great time to do this since you’re all together in a more intimate setting.

Check out our Gift Guide for dozens of unique, Vermont-made gift ideas for your wedding party. If you’re planning to gift something to wear on your wedding day (ex. jewelry, a tie) it’s a good idea to tell your crew not to worry about that item ahead of time so they don’t buy something else in preparation.

5. Take the classic wedding morning picture in matching pj’s with your bridesmaids

One popular gift for bridal parties that’s always a hit is matching pajamas! This also makes for a great photo opportunity. Pop some champagne, pile on a bed and snap your own cute picture with your bridal party. It’s a classic for a reason and still one of my favorite pictures from my own wedding.

6. Don’t Forget to Eat – Ideas for A Wedding Morning Breakfast and Lunch

Nobody wants to be hangry on your wedding day, so don’t forget to feed your crew and eat! Some easy ideas for a wedding morning breakfast that will fill everyone up: a bagel bar, a breakfast casserole (easy to make ahead of time), and a big fruit salad.

Depending on the timing of your ceremony, you’ll want to also provide lunch or at least some heavy snacks as well. Think: a hearty, mayo-free pasta salad or sandwiches.

A mimosa bar and coffee are always fun too!

If you’re getting ready and eating off site from your lodging, we recommend bringing your toothbrush, some mouthwash and some floss so you can freshen up after eating.

7. Do a trial run with your wedding day attire and accessories

Do a test run of everything you’re wearing on your wedding day before your wedding morning. We mean everything from your dress or suit to shoes, accessories, and undergarments.

You don’t want to find out your underwear pinches funny or have to Google “how to tie a bow tie” on the morning of your wedding.

Also, be sure to remove all the extra strings and tags from your clothes, like those pesky hanger loops on bridesmaid dresses or the suit jacket vent threads.

8. Shift your mindset on your wedding morning from “planning” to “celebrating”

Take off your wedding planning hat, and slip on your party hat (metaphorically speaking, or depending on your style, for real). Take a few minutes to admire yourself in the mirror after you’ve slipped on your dress or suit; play a special song and sit quietly; stage a dramatic champagne bottle pop while yelling “IT’S MY WEDDING DAY!” … whatever you need to do to ground yourself in the moment. You’ve done the planning and now the day is here – enjoy and celebrate!

We hope these tips help you start your wedding morning off right!

MEET VERMONT WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER KATE SEYMOUR

After meeting Vermont wedding photographer Kate Seymour, you may be torn: do you ask her to photograph your wedding with her gorgeous, natural style…or be your new adventure BFF and break it down on your dance floor all night long? Read on to learn more about Kate, her photography style, favorite things to do in Vermont, and her advice for couples!

How did you get into the wedding industry?

On a bit of a whim! A friend asked if I would photograph her wedding (knowing I had a strong photography hobby) and once the butterflies flew away, I fell in love with capturing every special moment of the day! Haven’t looked back since.

How would you describe your style?

Natural, earthy, and raw. Love bringing the outdoors into my images and keeping things candid.

What inspires your work?

Outdoor adventure and movement – this maintains the natural look and feel and makes couples comfortable!

What’s your favorite part of your job?

Meeting new people, hearing their stories and seeing new places!

Any special tips for couples?

Be as detailed as possible when discussing your day with your photographer. We are here to capture everything to tell a story. Every little moment is a special moment, even if it doesn’t seem like it, I guarantee you that looking back on your day, images of the smallest things on your wedding day will bring back all the feels!

What’s your favorite moment during a wedding?

The first dances. They can tell you so much about the relationship, the personality, and maybe I’ll get to learn a few new moves. 😉

What’s your favorite thing to do in VT?

Spending time on the trails (on foot, on skis, or on two wheels). Vermont is FILLED with fun trails to explore, often leading you to hidden waterfalls, swimming holes, mountain overlooks, etc.

If you had to choose another career, what would it be?

Adventure guide. I absolutely love sharing outdoor experiences with others. I’d love to travel the world planning exciting adventures for those who may be hesitant to head out on their own, giving them the skills and knowledge to feel more comfortable in their own escapades.

What’s a fun fact about yourself?

I used to own a dog boarding and daycare ranch in Wyoming.

What’s a song that always gets you on the dance floor?

That’s easy… whatever the first song that’s played… I’m on the dancefloor right from the beginning and typically never leave (except to take off my shoes and continue barefoot).

Thank you, Kate! Learn more about Kate Seymour Photography in the vendor guide.
