An Autumn Wedding for the Ages at Wilburton Inn

Melissa and Zane’s Manchester wedding was the perfect blend of personal history, autumnal beauty, and heartfelt celebration. Surrounded by the vibrant fall foliage of Vermont’s Green Mountains, the couple chose Wilburton Inn for its cozy charm and deep family ties. Vermont wedding photographers, Hannah Photography, beautifully captured every moment, from the couple’s joyful first look on the estate steps to their unforgettable night of dancing under candlelight. A Proposal in Their Favorite Vermont Escape

Melissa and Zane’s connection with Manchester began long before their wedding day. The town has been their favorite escape from New York City, and it became the backdrop for their engagement on a rare, warm October afternoon. Zane found a picturesque, foliage-filled spot to propose, and the couple celebrated with an intimate evening at a local bar, exactly as they had envisioned. Manchester also holds a special place in their families’ hearts, from Zane’s mother’s 50th birthday at the Wilburton Inn to Melissa’s parents’ wedding at Equinox Resort. With so much history rooted in this town, it felt only natural to return for their own celebration!

Surrounded by vivid fall foliage and a sophisticated charm,Wilburton Inn served as the perfect wedding destination for Melissa and Zane’s autumn “I do.” Deep in Manchester Village, Vermont, The Wilburton is a truly majestic destination resort found on a 30-acre hilltop estate. Built in 1902, the venue boasts two turn-of-the-century mansions, vacation homes, romantic suites, and a marble celebration pavilion perfect for weddings.

Personal Touches That Made It Their Own

The wedding day began with getting ready, surrounded by loved ones in The Wilburton’s stunning estate. The bridal party was pampered by True Vermont Beauty and surrounded by all things pink, ruffly, and pretty. Meanwhile, Zane enjoyed some time to relax with friends (golden eye masks included) before donning his bow tie for the day ahead. Melissa wore a stunning beaded gown paired with sheer white gloves as the couple shared a first look in the Inn’s bar and stepped out onto the estate’s grand steps for photos with the stunning fall foliage. 

Guests gathered in a tent on the marble pavilion as the ceremony began. Despite the first truly cold and rainy day of fall, the atmosphere was warm with love and the help of the tent’s heaters. The space was designed to mirror the season’s energy: moody, autumnal tones with deep maroons and romantic reds, carried through the florals, taper candles, and linens. Instead of traditional tables, one long table ran the perimeter of the tent, fostering intimacy and connection. Melissa and Zane exchanged vows beneath a simple yet elegant chuppah draped with deep red velvet and vines, surrounded by beautiful florals from Bramble & Bloom, before sealing their marriage with a kiss.

The reception carried the couple’s playful spirit, from sunglass escort cards (that later made great props at the photobooth and dance floor!) to cocktail napkins featuring engagement photos. Our favorite detail? Heart-shaped cakes, complete with sweet messages on top, were baked by Sweet Birch Bakery and set on each table when it came time for dessert. Candlelight glowed as friends and family toasted the newlyweds, while Young Love & The Thrills filled the tent with music that had guests on their feet all night long.

Every detail reflected Melissa and Zane’s vision of a day that felt authentic, easy, and celebratory. Their talented team of vendors helped bring this dream to life, with The Wilburton going above and beyond to make them feel like family and ensure that the couple could be fully present. From the breathtaking design to the unforgettable dancing, it was truly a night to remember.

A Sweet and Sentimental Spring Wedding at The Grafton Inn

On a beautiful June day, Jed and Deborah finally got to say “I do” at the wedding of their dreams. Their celebration had been postponed due to the pandemic (check out those cheeky cocktail napkins in the gallery!) and the anticipation of the day made everything that much sweeter. The long awaited wedding was held at the beautiful Grafton Inn in Grafton, Vermont and Hannah Photography captured the memories; check out the gallery below!

A Romantic Wedding Venue in Grafton, Vermont

The Grafton Inn is a romantic, full-service wedding venue. Known for its timeless village setting and beautiful surrounding mountains, Grafton is a top choice for couples dreaming of a storybook, authentically Vermont wedding day.

The Grafton Inn features 45 individually-decorated rooms in a combination of suites and guests houses, blending its historic atmosphere with modern amenities. During the wedding weekend, guests can indulge in inclusive amenities like morning coffee service, seasonal activities at the outdoor center, use of the fitness center, and daily afternoon refreshments in the main lobby. 

A Sentimental Wedding Worth The Wait

Jed had been ribbed time and again for not proposing to Deborah on a visit to Paris in 2018. When he finally did pop the question a few months later, as the sun set over Lake Champlain, he bent down on one knee in front of a miniature Eiffel Tower he brought along in his backpack. Deborah  said “yes” before he even got the ring out of his pocket. 

Despite the many setbacks and changed wedding dates caused by the pandemic, the couple’s commitment to celebrating their love never wavered.  After a long wait (728 days, to be precise) Jed and Deborah finally got to exchange vows surrounded by loved ones.

Meaningful Wedding Details

Deborah was a classic bride in her  beautiful lace gown from Fiori Bridal Boutique. For accessories, she attached a gold locket with a photo of her sister inside to her bouquet. Deborah lost her sister quite early in life, and wanted to make sure she could have her sister be with her in spirit as she walked down the aisle.

During the ceremony, Deborah and Jed chose to play Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles’ version of “Both Sides Now” to honor family members who had passed – and released butterflies during the song to remind everyone that love always remains, even as it changes form.

For one more unique touch, the couple hired Hope Sharp Art to paint a live wedding portrait. Guests truly enjoyed watching the painting come to life as Hope worked throughout the reception.

Colorful Summer Wedding at the Wilburton Inn

Sarah and Noah knew immediately they wanted to get married in Vermont. It’s where their love story began, after all. They visited several venues in the area, but as soon as they arrived at The Wilburton Inn, they know they found the perfect spot for them. Sarah describes it as beautiful and a little quirky with lots of space to gather with their friends and family for days of festivities. After delaying their wedding in 2020, it was more important than ever to bring everyone in their lives together to celebrate their love and have Hannah Photography capture their beautiful day!

Outdoor Wedding at The Wilburton Inn

The Wilburton Inn in Manchester, VT offers gorgeous panoramic mountain views, plenty of outdoor space, and specializes in destination weddings. Sarah and Noah wanted to ensure their wedding felt joyous and fun from start to finish. They did just that by incorporating beautiful, bright colorful flowers wherever they could! The floral arch for their ceremony and the bride’s bouquet from Birds of a Flower was especially stunning! The bridesmaids also all wore different colored dresses. 

If you are planning a Vermont wedding, the bride passed along some advice for couples. Sarah says, “plan a moment of quiet for just you and your partner after the wedding ceremony.” It was the perfect little stillness that was just their own and so special to them. 

Lively, Dance Centered Tented Reception

This couple LOVES the dance floor so it was a top priority to have the best time dancing with everyone at their reception. The Grift provided a great soundtrack as well as the most infectious energy! The version of the hora they played was particularly enthusiastic, definitely one of the best the team at the Wilburton had ever seen! 

As for the shirtless dance that is featured in so many photos, it is actually a Middlebury tradition with their college friends: you take your shirt off whenever “Like a Prayer” by Madonna comes on! And as for the lift… “We like practice what we call our ‘party tricks’ around the house when we’re bored,” says Sarah (who used to be a dancer). “That lift was from a show I was in college. We obviously had to pull out our best party trick for the dance floor!” This party looks like an absolute blast!

Quick recap: what is Vermont Weddings Best of 2021 Series?

A little backstory if you’re unfamiliar: we started the Best of series last year (2020) to highlight some of the amazing work by the talented teams in the Vermont wedding industry. It’s an opportunity to both celebrate a year’s worth of weddings and inspire couples who are planning a future Vermont wedding. (A quick note on the word “best”: the intention isn’t to make this a competition between weddings, but to share a small, but representative, sample of the weddings in Vermont this year.  To that end, please know that we love each and every wedding that was submitted, and the final picks are carefully chosen based on a variety of factors to create a compelling series.)

Megan and Jacob Hannah are not only partners in marriage and parenting, but also in business! They are the husband and wife team behind Hannah Photography. Megan sat down with Vermont Weddings to share more about their award-winning photography style and who they are behind the lens. 

How did you get into wedding photography?

Jacob’s background is in photojournalism; he was working as a newspaper photojournalist when we met in Nebraska ten years ago. I was working in insurance, and didn’t know the first thing about photography! After we got engaged, we moved to Vermont (where Jacob grew up), and dipped our toes into wedding photography and haven’t looked back since. 

Our associate, Josh Kuckens, joined us in 2018. He also has a background in photojournalism and has been a perfect addition!

How would you describe your photography style?

Photojournalistic. When we photograph a wedding, we prefer to just document the day as it unfolds. We step in to offer more direction during portraits, but otherwise, we try to just blend into the energy of the day! 

We want every photo you look back on to be attached to real memories, and we want you to be able to enjoy your day without us interfering.

What inspires your work?

We’re really inspired by families and relationships. Obviously, the relationship between a couple who is getting married is the primary focus of wedding photography. But beyond that, each partner has siblings, best friends, parents, grandparents – all of whom have played an important role in their lives. Your wedding day is special to them too! 

Personally, looking back at our own wedding photos, we cherish the ones that showcase these people over the more traditional, expected photos of us. 

Any special tips for couples for choosing a wedding photographer?

I think it’s really important to look at a lot of different photographers and find which style best aligns with your personality and wedding. There are SO many great photographers in Vermont with varying styles. 

I recommend viewing full wedding galleries when possible so that you have a good idea of how a full day is captured.

What’s your favorite moment during a wedding? 

It’s different for every wedding! We love the unexpected moments that pop up throughout the day. Usually our favorite photos from a day were not something we could have anticipated happening: a bride doing the worm on the dance floor, the son of the groom jumping into a pool fully clothed, a passing thunderstorm that results in a spectacular rainbow, that sort of thing! 

What’s your favorite thing to do in Vermont? 

There is nothing better than going for a bike ride or hike, and then cooling off by jumping into the local swimming hole!

What’s a fun fact about yourselves?

We have two year old twin daughters!

This tented wedding is the definition of casual elegance. Small tables were set up around the sail tent to maintain social distance, but the beautiful, natural table decor makes it feel more intimate.

A BEAUTIFUL SOCIALLY-DISTANCED BACKYARD TENT WEDDING

Get ready for some major microwedding inspiration today! “This wedding was a perfect example of a microwedding during COVID,” says photographer Megan Hannah of Hannah Photography. “The couple and their guests were very good at social distancing (even the family portraits are socially distanced), wearing masks when they were less than six feet apart, they even had their first dance outside the tent – just plenty of thoughtful touches to keep everyone safe.”
