The Ultimate Guide to Wedding Band Shopping

Are you recently engaged? Congratulations! As you begin planning your Vermont wedding, you’re probably thinking about venues, photographers, and florals… but don’t forget one of the most meaningful details you’ll wear every day after the wedding: your wedding bands.

Related Reading and free download: The Ultimate Vermont Wedding Planning Checklist and Timeline

Wedding band shopping is one of the planning process’s most fun (and symbolic!) parts. Whether you dream of matching gold rings, a unique custom design, or something that complements your engagement ring perfectly, there are a few key things to remember before you start shopping.

To help you find the perfect fit, we teamed up with Vermont’s Bella Lusso Jewelers to share expert tips, timing advice, and inspiration for choosing your wedding bands.

Bella Lusso

When to Start Wedding Band Shopping

You might be surprised to learn that shopping for wedding bands often takes longer than expected! Most jewelers recommend starting your search several months before your wedding to allow time for browsing, sizing, and possible custom designs.

“The earlier the better,” says the team at Bella Lusso Jewelers. “Ideally, couples should start looking about six months before their wedding, and even up to a year in advance if they’re interested in a custom design. We advise no later than six weeks before the big day, since most sizes take three to six weeks to ship, and it’s always nice to have extra time to make adjustments if needed.”

This ensures your bands arrive on time and gives you space to relax and enjoy one of the most symbolic purchases you’ll make together.

Questions to Ask Before You Shop

Before you head to the jewelry store, it helps to think through a few key questions together. This can make the  wedding band shopping process smoother and help you find rings you’ll both love for years to come.

  1. What’s our budget?
Before you start browsing, decide on a comfortable spending range. Wedding bands can vary widely in price depending on the metal, design, gemstones, or custom details.

  2. Do we want our bands to match or be unique?
Some couples choose coordinating designs, while others pick rings that fit their personal styles. There’s no right or wrong answer; it’s all about what feels right for you.

  3. What kind of metal and finish do we prefer?
Think about lifestyle and maintenance. Platinum is durable but heavier; gold offers warmth and timelessness; alternative metals provide a modern edge.

  4. How will the band pair with the engagement ring?
If one or both of you wear engagement rings, bring them to your appointment to see how different band styles fit together, especially if you’re considering a curved or contoured band.

  5. Is comfort a priority?
Spoiler alert: the answer here should be yes! So, try different widths, shapes, and fits. You’ll wear these rings every day, so comfort is just as important as appearance.

  6. Do we want something custom-made?

If you love the idea of a one-of-a-kind design, plan for extra time for custom work and engraving to be done.

How to Choose the Right Style

Your wedding bands are a reflection of your personal style and your story as a couple. Some couples love coordinating designs, while others prefer rings that reflect their individual tastes.

“Finding the right fit is all about coming in and trying on bands,” says the team at Bella Lusso Jewelers. “Thinking about style, metal, and budget is important, but ultimately, comfort and fit matter most. (After all, you’ll be wearing your rings every day, hopefully forever!) Bringing your engagement ring with you is key, especially for curved or contoured bands, or to see how straight bands pair with your setting.”

Starting early gives you plenty of time to explore all your options, and you might even discover you want something custom-made to make your rings truly one of a kind.

Caring for Your Wedding Bands

Your wedding bands are meant to last a lifetime and a little care goes a long way.

Most bands made with precious metals should be removed for working out, cleaning, swimming, and showering. Store them in a jewelry box, or safe place when not in use. Only use cleaners on your stones like mild dish soap, and avoid tooth paste, baking soda, and hard bristles. Alternative metal rings are stronger, but should be removed when lifting heavy, and in harsh environments as well.

We always recommend regular inspections of your rings,” adds Bella Lusso. “Have your prongs checked to ensure your stones stay secure, and consider having your ring rhodium-plated and polished over time. It will make it look as sparkly as the day you said ‘I do!’”

Choosing your wedding bands is a special moment in your engagement journey that symbolizes forever! Whether you design something custom or pick a classic pair off the shelf, the most important thing is that your rings feel meaningful to you and your partner.

Although most of these suggestions lean into wedding planning, we understand that the full-blown planning stage can sometimes feel overwhelming. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the details and let wedding talk take over every conversation. That’s why we fully encourage you to also plan dates where the focus is purely on enjoying each other’s company—wedding details off the table.

Grab your Dancing Shoes and Enroll in Dance Lessons

While it could seem a little bit intimidating at first, dance lessons with your partner can be a beautiful way to connect and learn with each other as you prepare for your first dance. This is a great date night to stay active and focus on coordination while sharing laughs over new steps and moves learned. Get out of your comfort zone, and into your dancing shoes! (Then, when the big day finally arrives, you can wow guests with your perfect dance moves!)

Have a Treasure Hunt

If you and your partner are creatives at heart and looking for ways to DIY your wedding decorations or favors, vintage, antique, and thrift stores can be a wonderful place to start! Thrifted dishes, glasses, or centerpieces can add a whimsical touch to a celebration and can also double as favors for each guest to take home. A mismatched thrifted look can so beautifully speak to your intricate love story or shared interests. Plan a day to stop by a few shops, and do some browsing. You might just be surprised at what you find!

Make the Perfect Playlist

Not sure about your wedding music yet? Creating a shared playlist with your partner is a fun way to pinpoint the perfect tunes and set the right mood for your big day—even if you’re not leaning into the traditional wedding vibe. Music is deeply personal, and this collaborative process can become a cherished memory in itself. You can build your playlist on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and more. Imagine cooking dinner together while you brainstorm tracks or curling up with a warm cup of cocoa as you decide on the songs for your cocktail hour or first dance. (All of this planning will help your DJ or wedding entertainment later!)

Capture your Engaged Era

It’s fairly possible that the last time you were in front of a camera for professional photos was a graduation, and jumping from that to having your entire wedding photographed can be a pretty big leap! This is our reminder that  Vermont wedding photographers don’t only photograph weddings. If you’re newly engaged and looking for ways to commemorate your love, an engagement photo session can be really meaningful and also lots of fun! It’s a great way to get to: know a photographer you’re interested in having photograph your wedding, a way to get comfortable in front of the camera, and a way to document this exciting phase in your love story!

Walk the Runway

When it comes to looking for outfits for your engagement shoot, party, or rehearsal dinner these decisions don’t necessarily need to be made apart from each other. While a bit of surprise and mystery can certainly be fun, taking time or planning a date to pick out outfits together can be exciting! A date night can be spent finding ways to match, showing off your finds, and (metaphorically) walking down the runway. We all deserve a fashion show!

Take a Trip to Your Venue

Explore what your venue and the surrounding area has to offer! This can serve as a wonderful weekend trip away to get more comfortable with the space you will soon be married in. Eating at the venue if it has a restaurant, or staying the night if your venue is an inn, lodge, or hotel can make you so much more comfortable with the space before your wedding and make it feel more truly yours! Haven’t picked a wedding venue yet? This is a great place to start.

Bond over Wedding Bands

Make picking out your wedding bands a fun and memorable date night! Our friends at Bella Lusso Jewelers suggest purchasing your bands about six months before your big day (and their team even offers a discount when you buy both rings together!) Since you’ll be wearing these forever, why not turn the experience into a special moment you’ll always cherish?
