Tucked into Vermont’s Mad River Valley, Mad River Barn brings together so many of the things couples love about getting married in Vermont: beautiful natural surroundings, a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and plenty to explore nearby. This historic property is especially suited to couples who want their wedding to feel less like a single event and more like a weekend spent together with the people they love most. For our latest Meet the Pros, we’re getting to know Vermont wedding venue Mad River Barn a little better, from the history behind the property to the spaces, amenities, and Vermont experiences that make weddings here so special.
The vibe: What are three words or phrases to describe Mad River Barn?
Cozy gardens, warm and inviting, and picturesque! Mad River Barn has the kind of atmosphere that feels welcoming from the moment you arrive. Cozy garden spaces, classic Vermont scenery, and a warm, relaxed setting make it a place where couples and their guests can settle in and truly enjoy your Vermont wedding weekend.
The space: Can couples host their ceremony and reception on site? What are those spaces like?
Yes! Couples can host their wedding day and continue the celebration afterward right on site at Mad River Barn.
Outdoor ceremonies take place at a dedicated ceremony site with built-in bench seating and an arbor, surrounded by the natural beauty of the property. From there, guests can transition to the post-and-beam Events Pavilion for the reception. The pavilion was designed specifically for events, offering a beautiful Vermont-inspired setting for dinner, dancing, and celebrating.
When the reception winds down, the night doesn’t necessarily have to end. The Pub and Game Room offer an on-site space to keep the party going with an after-party, meaning guests can move from one part of the celebration to the next without leaving the property. Our space can also accommodate other events you may want to hold during your wedding weekend as well, like a rehearsal dinner, welcome party or farewell brunch.
The amenities: What do you include?
Couples have access to many of the spaces and essentials needed to bring their wedding weekend together, including:

The area: What is there to do in the local area?
There’s plenty for guests to experience in the Mad River Valley! Outdoor lovers can spend their free time hiking, biking, swimming, or exploring the area’s ski mountains, including Sugarbush Resort and Mad River Glen. Guests can also slow things down with a visit to the local farmers market or farm stands, browse boutique clothing and housewares shops and art galleries, or stop by Lawson’s Finest Liquids for a taste of the local beer scene.
The history: Does the property have a rich history?
Mad River Barn’s story goes back long before it became a wedding venue. The property was originally a working Vermont farm before being converted into an inn during the 1940s. For years, it became a place for families to stay while enjoying Vermont’s winter and ski seasons.
The property underwent a full renovation in 2013, bringing new life to the historic inn. In 2017, the post-and-beam Events Pavilion was added, creating a dedicated space for weddings, gatherings, and four-season celebrations. Today, the property brings all of those different chapters together: Vermont history, hospitality, outdoor recreation, lodging, and celebrations all in one place!
The fit: Who are your ideal clients?
Mad River Barn is an especially great fit for couples who are laid-back, love the outdoors, and feel a strong connection to Vermont.
Rather than a Vermont wedding that feels overly formal, couples here can create a wedding that feels comfortable, welcoming, and true to them, surrounded by nature and with many parts of the experience happening right on the property. It’s a natural fit for couples who want their wedding to feel just as much about gathering their favorite people together and enjoying Vermont as it is about the wedding day itself.
